How to Convert Word to PDF Online (Free & Fast)

Need a Word document as a PDF? You almost certainly do not need to upload it anywhere. Word, Google Docs and the free apps already on your computer or phone can all export a PDF in a few clicks, and the result keeps your layout, fonts and spacing exactly as you set them.

Here are the four ways that work, from fastest to most flexible, plus what to do once you have the PDF.

Why convert Word to PDF at all?

A .docx file is an editable document, and it re-flows to fit whatever device opens it. Fonts you used may not exist on the other person’s computer, so line breaks shift and pages move. Some phones cannot open .docx at all without an app.

A PDF is a fixed picture of your pages. What you see is what the recipient sees. That is why employers ask for CVs as PDFs, why universities accept assignments as PDFs, and why invoices and contracts are nearly always sent as PDFs.

1. Microsoft Word (Windows or Mac)

This gives the best result, because Word itself creates the PDF.

  1. Open your document in Word.
  2. Choose File โ†’ Save As (or File โ†’ Export โ†’ Create PDF/XPS).
  3. Under file type, pick PDF.
  4. Before saving, click Options if you want to export only some pages, or to include bookmarks from your headings.
  5. Click Save.

On a Mac, File โ†’ Print โ†’ PDF โ†’ Save as PDF does the same thing.

2. Google Docs (any browser, free)

Useful when you do not have Word installed.

  1. Go to Google Drive and upload your .docx file.
  2. Open it with Google Docs.
  3. Choose File โ†’ Download โ†’ PDF Document (.pdf).

Check the result before you send it. Google Docs substitutes fonts it does not have, so a document with unusual fonts or a complex layout may shift slightly.

3. LibreOffice (free, offline)

LibreOffice Writer opens .docx files and has a one-click Export as PDF button in the toolbar. It is free, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and never sends your document anywhere. In the export dialog you can also reduce image quality to make the file smaller, or add a password.

4. On your phone

Why we do not offer a Word to PDF tool

Every Toolivoo tool runs inside your browser, so your files never leave your device. Converting a Word file faithfully means rebuilding its fonts, styles, tables and page breaks, and no browser can do that reliably. Every website that offers “Word to PDF” uploads your document to a server to do the work there.

For a CV, a contract or anything with personal details, that is a real consideration: your document sits on someone else’s machine, at least for a while. The four methods above keep the file on your own device and give a better result. So we would rather point you to them than build a tool that quietly breaks our own promise.

After you have your PDF

These parts do run in your browser, and Toolivoo handles them:

Common problems

The PDF looks different from the document. A font is missing. Export from the program you wrote it in, or switch to a common font such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman first.

The PDF is enormous. High-resolution images are usually the cause. Export at a lower image quality, or compress the finished PDF.

The text cannot be selected or searched. Something turned your pages into images. Export straight from Word or LibreOffice rather than scanning or screenshotting, and the text stays live.

You need to edit the PDF later. Keep the original .docx. A PDF is a final format, and editing one is always harder than editing the document it came from.
